    Introduction to PERL Programming

    January 18 - March 22, 2010
    Monday Evenings, 6:00 - 9:00pm

    Continuing Technical Education
    5269 Morris Street
    Halifax, NS

    Description

PERL is an interpreted programming language combining easy manipulation of text, files and processes. Used primarily as a World Wide Web development tool, PERL provides UNIX and Windows-based systems with the ability to design robust applications with ease.

Whether manipulating server-based data, processing data from web forms or running pre-programmed routines, PERL applications can provide a myriad of results. From simple e-mail redirection of form data to complex database lookups, PERL is able to manipulate the data required to drive your web site.

This course is an introduction to PERL, looking at PERL usage from a variety of aspects, including using PERL with the Word Wide Web. The course project is a student driven solution of their own where they will conceive, design and code a solution for their needs as well as work on assigned labs. Each class will end with a lab session to permit time to work on the project and assignments.

    Benefits to Participants

    • Gain a working proficiency in PERL script writing
    • Learn how to implement and manipulate web-based form data
    • Learn how to use PERL with databases

Project management is where organizations encounter the most serious problems and where there is the best opportunity for significant improvement. This course will focus on the project management process and help the participant understand the task of managing the software process to better understand the essential components of project management and how it can be improved in any organization.

    Who Should Attend

A secondary audience includes anyone who is managed by a project manager; they need to understand project management as they are affected by it. A third audience would be key user acceptors as it is also critical for them to understand the project management process and how it will affect them as the process is implemented.

    Description

The SQL language is widely used in database operations. It provides the common language that allows relational database systems to operate with each other even if they come from different manufacturers. As such it provides the basis for client/server systems and distributed databases. The language, which is the subject of an ANSI standard, not only handles queries but also enforces security and integrity constraints. This course is designed for those who already have some database experience. This will be a hands-on course. Half of the class time will be devoted to laboratory work with an SQL database system.

    Objectives

After completing this course you will be able to:

    • Create a database including its integrity constraints
    • Write complex queries and be aware of performance implications
    • Create and use views
    • Modify the contents of a database with UPDATE, INSERT and DELETE commands
    • Use the GRANT and REVOKE commands to control privileges
    • Write database functions, procedures and triggers

    Continuing Technical Education
    5269 Morris Street
    Halifax, NS

    Does this sound familiar?

"Professional writer" may not be in your job description, but you find a large (and frustrating) chunk of your work week devoted to producing emails and various documents. As a technical expert, you're master of your subject matter, but you struggle to find just the right words and the structures to organize your ideas. Writing eats up way too much of your time, and the sweat you put into it doesn't always guarantee a positive result.

Here's an intensive writing course to help you capture your ideas in well-organized, readable messages. The course comprises 10 online sessions. You will learn how to:

    • write persuasively for difficult audiences
    • improve your productivity as a writer
    • streamline your style and avoid "gobbledygook"
    • overcome common problems with grammar and punctuation
    • perform quality assurance testing on your documents

You'll come away from the course better able to:

    • craft emails that produce positive results
    • write reports people actually want to read
    • produce user manuals for real human beings

What should you expect from an online course?

Weekly online sessions are an hour long and feature a combination of lecture, group discussion, and interactive activities.

Weekly assignments enable you to practice the skills developed during the online sessions and receive detailed, individualized feedback on your writing. Writing assignments require a one- to two-page response and take about 90 minutes to complete.

In between sessions, the instructor is accessible via e-mail to answer questions and clarify feedback on assignments.

    Content

    Analyzing your audience
    Reaching nontechnical readers
    Writing more efficiently
    Organizing ideas effectively
    Writing clear technical description
    Developing your technical style
    Writing effective e-mail messages
    Grammar and punctuation brush-up
    Creating reports
    Creating instruction manuals

    Introduction to Programming
    and Problem-Solving with Java

    January 21 - April 8, 2010
    Thursday Evenings, 6:00 - 9:00pm

    Continuing Technical Education
    5269 Morris Street
    Halifax, NS

    Description

The focus of this course is to teach the methodology of problem solving and program design on computers using the programming language Java. Over the past decade, Java has become one of the most powerful programming languages and is being used in commercial environments world-wide. It is an object-oriented programming language with powerful features for graphics, multimedia and animation, and embraces the concept of web-based programming. It is also universal in that it offers platform independent programmability.

This course will lay the foundation for understanding programming concepts and developing computer applications using Java. Topics covered include basic programming constructs, variables and expressions, data types, reading data input, branching, looping and arrays. It introduces the principles of object-oriented programming and algorithm design. Graphics supplements are included for each concept.

The course will be conducted in 12 three hour sessions. Each session includes lectures and hands-on laboratory exercises. In addition, students are expected to work on assignments outside class hours.

    Who Should Attend

This course is designed as a foundation course in programming that teaches sound programming principles, interspersed with plenty of examples and hands-on practice. No prior programming experience, either in a structural programming language or an object-oriented language, is required. Students with prior experience with another language such as C will find the course beneficial to understand the differences between C and Java, and also to switch to the object-oriented style of programming.
